Colombia national team captain James Rodríguez has officially been included in Los Cafeteros’ squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, overcoming a highly challenging club season heavily disrupted by medical concerns.
The 34-year-old playmaker, whose decorated career includes high-profile stints at Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Everton, has endured a frustrating campaign with Major League Soccer outfit Minnesota United. Rodríguez has managed just two starts across the club’s opening 15 league fixtures, accumulating a mere 194 minutes of playing time on the pitch.
The veteran midfielder, who famously captured the Golden Boot at the 2014 World Cup, will lead his country alongside Bayern Munich’s star winger Luis Díaz. Their inclusion marks a triumphant moment for the South American nation as they secure their return to international football’s grandest stage after failing to qualify for the 2022 edition in Qatar.
Rodríguez gave the national team a massive scare in March when he was rushed to the hospital after exhibiting severe symptoms during Colombia’s 3-1 friendly defeat against France. The midfielder spent three days under close medical observation to recover from acute dehydration.
The incident triggered a wave of social media speculation, with several United States media outlets reporting concerns that he was battling rhabdomyolysis, a critical and potentially life-threatening muscle-wasting syndrome. However, Minnesota United officials forcefully dismissed those rumors, maintaining that his condition was strictly limited to severe dehydration. Rodríguez originally arrived in MLS in February, signing with the Loons just before the domestic season kicked off.
Premier League Star Power and Experienced Core Selected
The final selection features plenty of elite European pedigree. Crystal Palace’s dependable duo of fullback Daniel Muñoz and defensive midfielder Jefferson Lerma have comfortably secured their places on the flight, while legendary former Arsenal shot-stopper David Ospina brings a wealth of international experience to the locker room.
The squad is currently in the final stages of its training camp in Bogotá. Colombia kicked off their warm-up schedule with a friendly against Costa Rica on 1 June and will wrap up their preparations against Jordan on 7 June.
Marking the nation’s seventh appearance at a World Cup finals, Los Cafeteros will officially launch their Group K campaign on 17 June, facing tournament debutants Uzbekistan. They will then navigate subsequent group stage fixtures against DR Congo and European powerhouses Portugal.
